What You Should Know About Vinyl Soffits

If you have an old wooden roof soffit in need of replacement, you can contact a roofing company or contractor who can remove your rotted soffit and install a new vinyl one in its place. After all, when it comes to home maintenance, your roof is one of those things that you just don’t want to ignore.

What Is A Soffitc

While most people are familiar with some parts of a roof that can typically succumb to wear and tear, such as broken shingles and rusted flashing, in some cases, it is the soffit that can cause problems. A soffit is a covering between the outer edges of a roof and the adjacent wall of the house. If you stand under your roof’s overhang and look up, you will stare directly at the soffit, provided that your roof has one. The soffit actually plays an important role in preventing moisture damage to a roof as well as the house it sits upon.

Since many homeowners aren’t even aware of what a soffit is or what it does, they do not tend to inspect it on a yearly basis to ensure that it is in good shape. As a result, older soffits especially those that are made out of wood tend to rot over time. Fortunately, not all roof soffits are constructed out of wood. These days, more homeowners are taking some steps to have their older wooden soffits replaced with ones made out of vinyl. A.W. Ross is the controller of Lundberg Roofing, Windows & Siding, a company that has been serving Charlotte, North Carolina area since 1979, and according to him, vinyl soffits are a useful addition to most roofing systems.

Unlike wood, which has a tendency to rot when exposed to moisture, vinyl will not easily degrade over time. As houses age and gutters aren’t properly maintained, water has a way of seeping into the soffit area and sitting there for extended periods of time. A wet wooden soffit can quickly decay, thereby putting the rest of the roof and the associated home at risk. Vinyl, however, is able to withstand such circumstances. Vinyl is also cost-effective in the grand scheme of construction-related materials; the cost of replacing an old soffit with a new vinyl one is unlikely to break the bank.

Not only will a vinyl soffit help keep your property water-free, it can also save you energy. These days, most roofing companies will install vented vinyl soffits that allow for the circulation of air into your attic space while keeping moisture out of the picture. The increase of air flow can actually save you money by dissipating attic heat and cooling your house in the process.

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. QUESTION:
How to repair the vinyl roof on my car??
The vinyl roof on my car is quite badly cracked. How can I repair this? I’m thinking I can fill in the cracks with something like a spot putty, then lightly sand and then paint the vinyl.

Is there “vinyl paint” or special materials like spot putty that are specifically used to repair/paint vinyl??

If anyone has any specific tips or tricks, or name brands of good quality materials, please HELP!!!

    Thanks,

    • ANSWER:
The only way is to peel it off and put new vinyl on. And when you take it off, you will find a ton of rust. Sorry to break it to you. So, good luck.

  2. QUESTION:
Mazda mx 5 vinyl roof repair/replace?
My girlfriend vinyl roof on her Mazda mx 5 has a few rips in and leaks and was wondering if there was anyone knew anywhere near farnborough Hampshire. Where we can get it repaired or replace and a rough idea of how much it would cost for either. Thanks very much.

    • ANSWER:
Change an mx5 hood in an hour or so? Yeah good luck with that.

  3. QUESTION:
Any good tips for restoring a Vinyl Roof on a Cadillac Seville?
I have an 89 Cadillac Seville with a white Vinyl roof. The vinyl is cracked, has a few small tears, and the white dye has come off or faded in several places. I have purchased (based on a previous Yahoo Answer question I posted) vinyl repair kits, a vinyl cleaning solution, and something called SEM Color Coat, a vinyl paint or dye (not sure which one).

Before I dig in and do this, does anyone have any tips on this project, anything I should watch out for or be aware of, so I don’t wreck this thing? I’ve never done anything like this before so any tips would be appreciated.

    Thank you.

    • ANSWER:
Personally I would just get it replaced. Any good auto body shop or automotive reupholstery place should be able to do it. It will not be cheap, but you will be happier in the long run. I am going to get the white vinyl top replaced on my 77 Mustang, so I know what you are going through.

If you decide that you would rather DIY, then just follow the instructions provided on the packages of the materials you have bought. Try it on a smaller less obvious part of the top, if that is possible. Just take your time, and follow through with what the instructions say, and you should be alright.

  4. QUESTION:
    Car Roof Repair?
My car was vandalized and they cut through my convertable vinyl roof to open the door. Any suggestions on repair or replacement?
The rip is an L-shape about 6 inches by 2 inches.

    • ANSWER:
Look for LIQUID VINAL you know where!

  5. QUESTION:
How do I repair a VW Polo Open Air Sunroof or where can I get a replacement?
    Hi,

Does anyone know if it’s possible to repair the vinyl roof of a Polo Open Air (’97) or how I might go about finding someone to do it, how much etc? Anyone had theirs repaired?

    • ANSWER:
Its a similar scenario to a ripped soft top. You should be able to find a car upholsterer either online or in the Yellow pages who can advise you.
